Deacon Willis C. Hunter was called home Thursday January 18, at McCurtain Memorial Hospital. He was born December 26, 1953, Tom, Oklahoma to the late John Ive Hunter Sr. and Stella Mae Burris Hunter. Willis, known as Sam by all his friends and family was member of First Baptist Church Westside, Idabel.
Willis accepted Christ at an early age and was at Bright Star Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev T.T. Threadgill. After moving to Idabel, he joined The Oliver Branch Baptist Church and some years later he joined First Baptist under the leadership Rev. Ralph White
Sam was a very active member of his church. He served as deacon, operating the PA system for the church and was available in any capacity needed of him. He was also the church bus driver. He loved his church.
In 1978 he married the love of his life, the late Roni Jean Walker. Had our God permitted they would be celebrating 46 years of marriage this January. To this union they were blessed with 2 sons, Brandon, and Dathan.
Willis worked for Idabel Coca Cola Plant for a few years and several other small jobs before he signs on at Tyson Food where he worked for 17 years. While working at Tyson he a forklift driver. After leaving Tyson he started work for Little Dixie Transit as a Transit driver until he retired.
Sam loved his sons and was very proud of them. He was an avid football and basketball fan; he loved attending the games until his health began to fail him. Sam was a good man; he would help anyone that needed help. This was one of his downfalls he cared too much for other and he will be miss by all.
Memories of his life will forever be remember by his sons Brandon Hunter, Denver, Colorado, Dathan Hunter, Idabel, OK. His Funeral is set for 11 am on Saturday January 27th, 2024 at the First Baptist Westside with Pastor Roy Yates officiating.
Interment will follow at Williamston Cemetery.
