Rev. Walter (W.J.) Cotton Jr. was the second child born to Walter Cotton and Willie T. (Harris) Cotton on November 26, 1946 in Kulli Tuklo, Oklahoma. Rev. Walter Jr. passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Paris Regional Hospital North in Paris, Texas.
Jr. Cotton grew up in Oak Grove Community where at a young age; he joined Oak Grove Baptist Church. During this time, he attended Oak Grove Elementary School and Booker T. Washington High School in Idabel, Oklahoma. Following high school, he pursued his education in Los Angeles, California, where he obtained his degree as an air craft mechanic.
In 1971, Walter Cotton Jr. met and married, Shirley M. Davis. To this union, two sons were born to complete a family that included his two daughters from a previous marriage. Rev. W. J. Cotton was called to the ministry in 1982 under the leadership of Pastor W. J. Wallace. During this time, he attended Enon Baptist Association in Ardmore, Oklahoma and Bishop College in Dallas, Texas where he received his certificates of completion. In 1983, he began his path of pastor-ship which he continued for a 29 year period, a time during which he received his Associates Degree form Southeastern District School of Religion. On June 27, 2004, Pastor W.J. Cotton organized and established Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Idabel, Oklahoma; Spring Hill Community. His last five years of pastor-ship were concluded at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Broken Bow Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Cotton Sr. and Willie T. Cotton.
Pastor Walter Cotton Jr. leaves to cherish his memory; his loving wife of 42 years, Shirley Cotton of Idabel Oklahoma; Two sons, Rodrick Cotton of Kansas City, Missouri, and Rev. Sedrick (Ondria) Cotton Sr. of Arlington, Texas; Two daughters, Yolanda Rhone and Cynthia Trujillo, both of Denver Colorado; Three brothers, Robert L. (Betty) Cotton of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Douglas (Doris) Cotton of Bryan, Texas, and Elbert Cotton of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; Three sisters, Creola Cotton of Paris, Texas, Beulah Phipps of Los Angeles, California, and Belinda (Richard) Davis of Paris, Texas; Eleven grandchildren, one great grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral arrangements are set for 11:00 am Saturday March 30, 2013 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Broken Bow, with Rev., Sedrick Cotton Eulogist.
Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
