Verlene Pickings

December 24, 1943 — July 13, 2022

Verlene Dillihunt was born in Idabel, Oklahoma to the parentage of Lula Gregory and Merchant Dillihunt, Sr. Verlene was the eighth of eleven children born to this union.

Verlene attended schools in the Idabel Independent School District, Slater Junior High School, and Booker T. Washington High School. Verlene was baptized at an early age into the fold of the Church of Christ; her mem- bership began at Westside Church of Christ. Subsequently, Verlene became a member of Lynn Lane Church of Christ.

Verlene enjoyed cooking, dancing, and fishing, and she never lost her passion for cooking or fishing. Verlene had an electric personality and a knack for storytelling.

Verlene could command the attention of any room she entered with her many over-illustrated recantations of events. Verlene was an avid gospel singer who previously traveled as part of a singing group that included her sisters. While Verlene held various jobs, her most treasured was that of a Homemaker and Grandmother. How- ever, Verlene felt it was a remarkable journey to witness her bloodline span four generations.

Verlene was preceded in death by her parents, Merchant, Sr. and Lula Dillihunt; her brothers, Elzie Lee Dillihunt, Sr.; Henry Lee Dillihunt, Sr.; Joe Dillihunt; and Merchant Dillihunt, Jr.; her sisters, Bobbie Jean Alford; Jewel Major; Lillie Mae Johnson; Mary Katherine Dillihunt.
Her loving memory will shine in the lives of her two daughters, Sherial DeLois Dillihunt of Norman, Oklahoma; Toni Marcell (Larry) Smith of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three grandsons; two granddaughters; one great-grandson; eleven great-granddaughters; two great-great-grandsons; and one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Georgia L. Jordan of Ennis, Texas; Martha Alice (Gene) Williams of Idabel, Oklahoma. Verlene also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
