Vel Vernon "Skinnie" Burris was born April 8, 1945 to the late Isabell Burris and A.J. Burris in Tom, Oklahoma.
He accepted Christ at an early age at his home church of New Dora Baptist Church in Tom. He attended Pine Ridge Elementary School through the eighth grade and he graduated high school from Riverside High in May of 1962. In 1968, he married Leatha Chatman Walker and four children were born to this union.
Vel was employed with Weyerhaeuser Company in Valliant, Oklahoma for a short time. He then moved to North Carolina for two years. Vel later married Anna Lee Murphy, who preceds him in death. He also worked for Pilgrim's Pride where he retired in 2006.
Vel is preceded in death by; two brothers, two sisters, daughter Tracy, and a grandson Kendell.
He leaves to cherish his memories: two sons, Marcus Burris and wife Callie of Wright City, Oklahoma, and Lavel Reeves of Kansas City, Missouri; four daughters, Tammy Bagsby of Idabel, Oklahoma, Deon Dewberry and husband Waylon of Idabel, Sonya Hall of Dallas, Texas, and Cassandra Beard of Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, Thurman Burris and wife Mae of Bridewood, North Carolina, John Burris and wife Leona of Idabel; four sisters, Anita Cooper and husband Vaster of Idabel, Pearl Burris of Idabel, Dianna Bradly and husband Roosevelt of Foreman, Arkansas, and Velma Williams of Seattle, Washington; two uncles, J.D. Williams of Tom, Oklahoma and John Williams of El Paso, Texas; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Charles Matthews of Idabel and one sister-in-law, Vanessa Burris of Idabel; three step-children, Jason, Valarie and Adrian; and two very special friends, Frank Guess of Idabel and Cortil French also of Idabel.
Services are set for 11 AM Saturday October 13, 2012 at Booker T. Washington Community Center.
A private Inurnment will take place at a later date.
