Robert Earnest Cotton, Jr. was born on December 19, 1923 in Kulli Tuklo, Oklahoma. He was the first of ten children born to Robert Earnest Cotton, Sr. and Elisa (Thomas) Cotton. Robert Jr. passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at St. Michaels Hospital in Texarkana, Texas.
Robert Jr. grew up in Harris, Oklahoma. He attended elementary school at Pleasant Hill and high school at Slater-Rosenwald High School. He was baptized at Rebecca Baptist Church in Kulli at an early age.
Robert Jr. enlisted in the United States Army on August 21, 1943. He served as a heavy truck driver and a rifle sharpshooter during World War II. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Metal and was honorably discharged on January 19, 1946. Except for his time served, Robert Jr. was a lifelong resident of McCurtain County. He was a farmer by trade and an avid gardener, hunter and fisherman.
He is preceded in death by: his parents, Robert Sr. and Eliza; one son, Earnest Lee; two sisters, Cara Essielean Henderson and Nena M. Cotton; and some step-children.
Robert Jr. leaves to cherish his memory; his loving wife Juanita Cotton of Idabel; five daughters: Alma Jewel Shannon of Ardmore, Oklahoma and Annette Smith of Texarkana, Texas, Shenyon Doolin of Baltimore Maryland, Anita Neal of Idabel, and Kathy Sheppard, Norman, OK; one son, Andrew Charles Hunter of Oklahoma City; and many step-children and step-grandchildren; he also leaves three sisters: Verdia DeLoney of Oklahoma City, Rita B. Randle of Del City, Oklahoma, Velma Williams and husband Cecil of Rolla, Missouri; four brothers: Charlie O. of San Diego, California, Don L. of Houston, Texas, Ulysses S. of Reston, Virginia, and William HD of Oklahoma City; three grandchildren: Estoria McGee, Ray Shannon, Josie Lightsey; five great grandchildren: Jerome Shannon, Jonathan Wrenn, Camesha Woods and husband R.J., Travis Lightsey, Jr. and wife Marissa, and Christopher Shannon; six great-great grandchildren, Trevon Lawson, Ja'Tiva Shannon, Ja'Tavion Shannon, Kameaya Woods, Ayann Woods, Isaiah Lightsey; plus Annette's two son's; a special friend, Henry Duckett; along with my cousins, other family members and acquaintances.
Funeral arrangements are set for 1:00 pm Friday March 30, 2012 at Community Faith Baptist Church 1412 W Martin Luther King Drive with Rev. Kevin Haywood officiating.
Interment will follow at Williamston Cemetery Idabel
