Paul Gene Viney, a man whose life was defined by service, humility, and unwavering dedication to his community, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026, at McCurtain Memorial Hospital. Born on July 18, 1943, in Harris, Oklahoma, to Fred and Lorene Viney, Paul grew into a pillar of strength and compassion in McCurtain County.
Paul’s educational journey began at Booker T. Washington in Idabel, where he built a foundation that would support his lifelong commitment to serving others. Early in his career, Paul bravely broke barriers as the first Black ambulance driver in McCurtain County—a role marked by courage and pioneering spirit. His service as an officer with the Idabel Police Department further exemplified his dedication to protecting and uplifting his community.
Beyond these meaningful beginnings, Paul continued to serve in vital roles with Idabel Public Schools and McCurtain County Hospital in maintenance. Through these positions, he contributed quietly but significantly to the well-being of many families, ensuring environments that supported care, education, and healing. Later, extending his compassion in a profoundly impactful way, Paul joined Nunley’s Funeral Home, where he offered solace and dignity to grieving families during their most challenging times.
Paul’s proudest accomplishments did not come from accolades but from the countless lives he touched through kindness, humility, and steadfast dedication. His legacy is one of perseverance and love, woven into the fabric of McCurtain County and the hearts of many.
He is survived by his beloved son, Terry Viney, who was his greatest pride. Paul’s heart was full of love for his grandchildren—Tearah, Irene, Terry Jr., Uriah, Terrion, Tamya, Chantz, Larry, Zaymarrion, Malajeh, Trinae, ChaTaja, and Jayvon—each of whom held a special place in his life. His devotion extended warmly to his siblings: Lessie (Governor) Johnson, Theodore (Lou) Walker, Glenda Austin, Betty Warren, Ozie Bradford, and Beverly Sherman, as well as his brother-in-law Malcolm Galloway. Paul cherished a broad circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who admired and relied upon his steadfast presence and celebrated life alongside him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Lorene Viney, and his sisters, Sarah Ann Galloway and Ollie Mae Perry.
