Mrs. Opal TEE Roberts was born October 28, 1935 to Robert (Bob) and Naomi Gilbert in Idabel, Oklahoma. On Friday, January 18, 2018 - with her family gathered around – she earned her wings.
She was called Momma or Mrs. Opal by many who knew her; but, to her grands, she was Big-Momma. She was the family matriarch and very much respected by all members in her family. She was famous for her fried chicken at church and family events. Her most requested desserts were her delicious tea cakes and sweet potato pies; both family favorites.
Mrs. Opal attended Slater-Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington schools in Idabel where she played basketball. She also attended Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma. She worked as a home health aid for many years. As a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church, she was an usher, choir member, and unofficial church cook until her health began to decline.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Roberts; parents, six sisters, and four brothers.
Continuing her legacy are: Daughter, Karla (Kacey, Sr.) Beard of Idabel, Oklahoma. Sons, Luther Gist III of Idabel, Oklahoma; James (Terri) Gist and Donald Gist, both of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Sisters, Mary (Jackie) Craft of Kansas City, Kansas and Annie Dunn of California. Step-daughters, Rosie Roberts of Kansas City, Kansas and Opal Jean Roberts of DeKalb, Texas.
Also, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and the many children and adults who affectionately called her "Momma."
