Harriet Belle McCarty Rutan was born to E.B. "Whitey" McCarty and Dora K. Chapman McCarty on April 8th, 1916 in Terry, Montana. Harriet passed away Sunday, March 31st, 2013 at the Broken Bow Nursing Home. She went peacefully and was with family and friends.
She graduated from high school in Terry, Montana on May 5th, 1934. She moved to Miles City, Montana to attend business school. She raised her family in Rapid City, South Dakota where she was a cook and restaurant owner. Harriet enjoyed family and friends, cooking and traveling. Music was a big part of her life. She could play the piano wonderfully without ever having a lesson. Harriet never met a stranger in her life and could tell stories of growing up on the prairies of Montana that were unbelievable but true. A true pioneer lady, who will be missed terribly, and loved forever.
Harriet was dedicated and baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on January 31st, 1988 and was a faithful member until her death. She enjoyed attending her meetings and associating with her brothers and sisters in the Idabel, and Broken Bow congregations. Her favorite song was "Life without End at Last."
She was preceded in death by: one brother, Earl McCarty; three sisters, Edna, June and Pearl; three children, Jerry Kreager, Dan Kreager and Patsy Kreager.
Harriet is survived by: three children, Sharon Buzan and husband Darrell of Idabel, Oklahoma, Don McLaughlin and wife Pam of Idabel, Oklahoma, and Marlis Brunson and husband Don of Rapid City, South Dakota; one brother, Morris McCarty of Craig, Colorado; nineteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and thousands of friends.
The family would like to thank all the staff at the nursing home for everything they did for Harriet. You all made Mom's journey a smooth ride. Thank you.
A Memorial service is set for 2:00 PM Wednesday at the Idabel Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses 210 Lincoln Road with Brother Kenneth Crane officiating.
Another Memorial service will take place in Rapid City, South Dakota at a later date.
