Grover M Whitfield

Grover Whitfield was born on February 27, 1922 at Jones Farm, Oklahoma to Elmira and Williams McKinley Whitfield. He passed away Friday, December 6, 2013 at McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel, Oklahoma.


He joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church as a teenager. Grover graduated from Riverside High School and joined the United States Army in 1945. He served courageously in World War II in the Philippine Islands and received an honorable discharge.


Grover married Betty Lou Thomas of Ft. Smith, Arkansas and to this union two children were born. The family owned a farm and raised cattle in Ft. Smith until the couple moved to Riverside, California. Grover worked for the City of Los Angeles and also in the shipping yards. Sometime later her returned to Tom, Oklahoma where he joined New Dora Baptist Church later in life.


"Uncle G" was loved by everyone. He had the ability to befriend the young and the young at heart with his fun-loving spirit. Uncle G was truly one of a kind. When he was in his prime years, he spent his time playing the "Rifle Man", fishing and hunting. He loved watching basketball, especially the Tom Tigers and the Haworth Lions. He could be seen on the bench with the teams or in the stand cheering his teams to victory.


Uncle G is preceded in death by: his father, William McKinley Whitfield; his mother, Elmira Whitfield; sister, Rose Howard; brother, Samuel Whitfield; son, Roy Whitfield; and daughter, Helen Henderson.


He leaves to cherish his memory: one sister, Altis "Bea" Ezell of Tom, Oklahoma; two daughters, Glenda Whitfield of Gardena, California and Margaret Phillips of Pasadena, California; three sons, Ed Whitfield of Sacramento, California, LeeDale Whitfield of Cartridges, Texas, and Cody Foreman of Hugo, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, along with a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends; and his devoted caregiver and friend, Glenda Cox.


Funeral Services are set for 11 am Saturday December 14, 2013 at New Dora Missionary Baptist Church, with Elder James Ezell officiating.

Interment will follow at St. Luke Cemetery with a Military Honors Team
