Dorothy Scott Hill

August 2, 1922 — October 17, 2018

Idabel

In my Father's house are many mansions: If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  John 14:2

On Wednesday morning, October 17, 2018, our sweet mother Dorothy Scott Hill peacefully transitioned to her Father's house with its many mansions. WE REJOICE!

Dorothy was born to Amos Scott, Sr. and Maggie Hocker Scott on August 02, 1922 in Acworth, Texas. As a child, she and her siblings, along with her parents, labored hard as sharecroppers. The family relocated to Oklahoma by crossing the Red River on a barge. They settled on a small plot of land near the river. They lived there until their home burned in the early 1950's.

They located another plot of land and home in the Richland community and purchased it. She continued to reside there until she passed. She raised her family in the home; it was the family home. It was where she prepared delicious meals and hosted out-of-town relatives who enjoyed her scrumptious fried chicken and tasty coconut cakes.

Dorothy was a role model for her children. She showed them how to work, she didn't tell them. She took them to church, she didn't send them. With her strong work ethic and straightforward demeanor, she embodied a "Phenomenal Woman" in their eyes.

When the children were young, she showed them how to pick cotton, pull cucumbers, and pick up pecans. As her children matured, she wanted to ensure that she could help them with their educational expenses, so she began working at Oak Grove Nursing Home; then, she worked at McCurtain Memorial Hospital. She obtained employment with Idabel Public Schools as a cook in the cafeteria. After working there for many years, she returned to work in the dietary department at McCurtain Memorial Hospital. She retired after 15 years of service on October 16, 1991.

Dorothy attended school at Macedonia during her primary and grade school years. She often shared stories of her and her siblings having to ride in a wagon or walk miles across fields – rain or snow - to get to school. She attended and graduated from Slater-Rosenwald in Idabel.

She accepted Christ and joined Macedonia Baptist Church in the bottomlands of Idabel and worked dutifully and diligently as an usher and mission sister until her health prevented her from attending.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents. Beloved daughters: LaVerne and Shirley. Grandson: Nicholas. Siblings: Amos, Will, Eugene, Charley, Zummie, Abner, Ruth, Katie, and Lois.
