Broken Bow

Carlos LeRoy Cooper passed away February 5, 2019 in Hochatown, Oklahoma.  He was born April 15, 1953 in Fresno, California.  He was a blessing to his proud parents Lonnie Q. Cooper and Mary I. Cooper of Broken Bow, Oklahoma. He accepted Christ at an early age and became a member at Hill's Chapel C.M.E. Methodist Church.

Carlos was educated in the Broken Bow School System.  He attended Dunbar Elementary School and graduated from Broken Bow High School, class of 1970.  Upon graduation from high school, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1974 from Langston University, Langston, Oklahoma.  His Greek affiliation in college was Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, Alpha Pi Chapter.  In 1976 he enlisted in the United States Army.  After completing his service with an honorable discharge in 1979, he relocated to Houston, TX.

Carlos began his teaching career in Houston Independent School District.  He taught at Wheatley High and Booker T. Washington High Schools for 35 years.  While at Booker T, he worked with the Science Club, Yearbook Committee and coached the girls' softball team.   He was a dedicated teacher who loved motivating and teaching students.  He retired from the school district in 2014.

Carlos was united in marriage to Patrisha A. Runnels on August 6, 1986.  To this union two sons were born, Carlos L. Cooper II and Patrick A. Cooper.

Carlos was always cheerful, friendly, and very outgoing.  His interests were wide and varied. He loved reading, photography, tennis, football, basketball, baseball, and returning to Broken Bow to update and restore the family's property.

Carlos was a great husband, dad, grandad, brother, Uncle, and friend.  He loved to make people laugh.  His energy, vitality, and love for life will carry on through his family and friends.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Mary Cooper and Johnnie B. Washington-Kennybrew; Uncle and Aunt, Isaiah and Hazel Bishop, Charles and Marie Butler; Sisters, Barbara Peters, Emma Watson, and Shirley Jones.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his sons, Carlos and Patrick Cooper; wife, Patrisha Cooper; Step-son, Stacy Williams (Dana); grandson, Destin Cooper; sisters, Della E. Ivory (Donald), Marilyn Gunn(Herb - deceased) and Billie J. Smith; Uncles, Ivory L. Butler (Pearl), Vick Cooper (Marcia) and Kenneth Cooper (Sharon); brothers, Rev. James Washington (Jeraldine), Q.T. Washington (Lorrine), and Sidney Jones; sisters-in-law, Betty Hardy (Paul- deceased) and Vicki Irving (George); brother-in-law, Andrew Runnels IV (Brenda- deceased) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and great friends.

Services will be held, Saturday, Feb.16, 2019  at St. James C. M. E. Church in Idabel, Oklahoma. Viewing will be at 1:00 P.M. with the services to follow at 2:00 P.M.

Internment at Lukfata Cemetery in Broken Bow, Oklahoma.
